What an RMR Test Actually Tells You (And What It Doesn't)

By Yaa Boakye · Mar 28, 2026

Resting metabolic rate is the floor of your daily energy needs. Here's how to test it and use the number.

Resting metabolic rate is the energy your body spends existing: heart, brain, lungs, temperature, repair. It's roughly sixty to seventy percent of your daily burn, and it is the single most useful number to measure rather than estimate.

How the test works

You arrive fasted, rest quietly, and breathe into a device that measures oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production for about fifteen minutes. From that exchange we calculate what you're actually burning at rest — and often how much of that fuel is fat versus carbohydrate.

What the number is good for

  • Setting a calorie target that isn't borrowed from a calculator built on someone else's body.
  • Catching adaptation after a long dieting history — a measured RMR well under prediction is real information.
  • Tracking recovery of metabolic rate during a deliberate maintenance phase.

What it can't tell you

RMR says nothing about your activity, your training load, or your food quality. It is a floor, not a forecast. And a single test on a bad night's sleep is a snapshot in poor lighting — retest before making a dramatic decision.

Measure the floor, then build the day on top of it. Most plans skip straight to the furniture.
