Nutrigenomics is the study of how your genetics shape your response to food. Not what you're allowed to eat — how your body handles what you already eat. It explains why two people on the same plan get two different sets of labs.

Genes worth understanding

  • CYP1A2 — how fast you clear caffeine. Slow clearers feel one coffee for eight hours.
  • APOE — how your body handles saturated fat and what that means for cholesterol.
  • MTHFR — folate processing, relevant to energy, mood, and pregnancy planning.
  • FTO — appetite regulation and satiety signaling, not a weight sentence.
  • LCT — lactose persistence, which resolves years of guessing about dairy.

What genetics does not do

A variant is a tendency, not a diagnosis. Genes load the pattern; behavior, sleep, training, and stress decide how loudly it plays. Anyone selling a gene test that hands you a rigid meal plan is selling certainty that the science does not have.

How I use it in practice

Genetics sets the starting hypothesis. Labs and real-time data confirm or reject it within a few weeks. If your panel suggests slow caffeine clearance and your sleep tracker agrees, we move the cutoff to noon and watch recovery improve. If the data disagrees with the gene, the data wins.
